The New "Sir Vivian Richards Stadium" Was Host
to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007.

The newly erected stadium accommodated up to 20,000 people for the tournament held March 27th through April 8th. A total of eight games took place there. The capacity was reduced to 11,000 permanent seats after it finished. Funded by a grant from the Chinese government, the ground has two main stands - the north and south - a beach and underground passages for the teams. The venue is conveniently located just minutes from the airport and from the capital, St. John's.

About Sir Vivian Richards:
Richards was one of the most extraordinary batsmen in the history of the game. He still holds the record for the fastest Test century, off 56 balls against England in St John's in 1986. Richards was named one of Wisden's "Five cricketers of the Century" in 2000.

Local Cricket Teams:
Most local village have their own youth cricket team. As you take a drive around the island, you will see them playing in the open fields. In season, large team matches are popular on weekends at the Recreation grounds in town. Antiguan's are proud of their teams and have a good time cheering and having parties in the stands - while the games are taking place.
The Stadium:
A multi-use, ultra-modern stadium located in Antigua and Barbuda. Its construction was financed by China. The venue cost an estimated $60US million to build. The stadium constitutes two main stands, the north stand and the south stand as well as other minor stands. Other facilities include a practice pitch for the various cricket teams, training infrastructure and a multi-media center. The stadium is one of the few state-of-the art versions that encompass underground passage ways for the cricket teams to move about.
